Edd has always had an interest in music. His mother is also a singer and teaches piano which has had an influence on Edd who sings, plays
guitar and piano. However drums aren't a strong point with Edd, he left that to his brother who played drums in Route 706 (Edd and Terry's former
band). Edd started playing guitar at the age of 14 jamming along to the popular british rock tracks of the mid 90's but he soon moved into classic rock and metal with Iron maiden being his prefferred choice. Edd also took classical singing lessons which helped him develop strength, power and range in his voice along with a technique which should help give his voice longevity (something which most rock singers struggle with). Edd and his younger brother started a band with various name changes and line-up changes but in 2000 they became Route 706. In 2002 Route 706 played Pentrich rock and blues festival alongside the likes of 90's chart act "the Levellers". In the same year Edd also won a vocal competition with the Meat Loaf song "Bat out of hell" and gladly took the £1000 cash prize - "I didn't even know the words" says Edd. It was his stage presence and vocal ability that helped him win. In early 2005 Edd joined nottingham based classic rock band Tin-rat as lead singer which helped him get to grips with different types of audiences. "The Tin-rat era was the best and worst part of my career" says Edd "It was good to be playing regular gigs doing the music I liked but i never really felt like a frontman, it always felt like I was on pop idol or the x-factor constantly being paranoid about how i'm being judged....I couldn't be myself". Edd's classical teaching combined with his main influences of Bruce Dickinson and David Coverdale have really helped him to develop his own unique vocal style. |
