The Story of Wrathchild...be thy name
is one that could have easily not happened at all. The chances of Edd and Terry even meeting are very
slim when looking at their backgrounds. Terry was halfway through his A-levels when his family moved from Chilwell to Heanor,
Terry was studying Art and graphic design as he had all his life, but quit to do music. A brave choice
considering he was always one of the top artists in his schools and......he'd only played a guitar for the first time a month earlier. At SEDC Edd and Terry met on the same course but it is fair to say that for the first year they did not get on, but linked together after a college project in which Terry wrote "God of apathy" - an Iron Maiden inspired track written specifically for Edd's vocals. Edd wrote "I won't lie", both songs they would perform together later and both are currently being re-recorded for the upcoming album. Edd invited Terry to join his band "Route 706" - an originals band that had been going for some years and had seen more line-up changes than most football teams. Like most local bands Route 706 played a few gigs a year but never really got into "the local scene" as they weren't the usual headbanging thrash or death metal of most local rock bands. They weren't afraid to use harmonising guitars, add 2 guitar solos on a song or sing without screaming. In 2003 Edd was asked by Belper council to perform for the Christmas fair which he had done previous years with other band members. This year Edd and Terry performed acoustically some of their own songs along with "Sweet child o' mine", "Is this love?" and even Y&T's "I believe in you". After the gig they decided to try to get Route 706 some gigs around local pubs but were unlucky. However, the Duke of Devonshire said they were interested but didn't have the space or the liscence for a full band. At this point Edd and Terry said "what about just 2 of us doing acoustic versions of Guns 'n' roses, Whitesnake etc". Paul (Landlord at the time) was very interested. 2 months later "Wrathchild" was born, but their plans of acoustic songs went out the window and instead brought their electrics, amps, and PA and backing tracks they'd made. Wrathchild went down a storm that first night playing the likes of Black Sabbath, Guns 'n' Roses, and Iron Maiden and got themselves a few more gigs lined up there. At the time Edd was taking the role of both lead singer and guitarist with Terry as the rhythm, but as the gigs started coming Edd put down the guitar more frequently to take charge as a frontman whilst Terry took up the lead guitar duties. Wrathchild started as a side project alongside Route 706 but they saw that they were getting more gigs as Wrathchild than as Route 706. They decided that Route 706 should convert to becoming a covers band and do what Wrathchild do but as a full band. Other band members did not want to go down that route (no pun intended) and Route 706 gradually fizzled out. Wrathchild's entire set-up has more than doubled in size since the first gig with the PA going from 500 watts to 4K and between them they've used 7 guitars, 6 amps, 5 different guitar effects rigs, 7 microphones and as many plectrums as Edd could possibly borrow from Terry...and then lose. They aren't violent, or break stuff live....they just like updating and getting better (or more) equipment. Wrathchild then changed their name in November 2005 to Wrathchild...be thy name due to legal reasons (there is one band called Wrathchild who were around in the 80's and are sure there is another band. The name had to be changed as they didn't want to get their backsides sued. The agent's promotional material may still say "Wrathchild" because it's how most people know us and it's easier and shorter. |
